Mind's Annual Appeal, 2006

A calendar featuring striking artwork from people with mental health issues, combined with a frank letter outlining the challenges ahead and reminding donors of everything they helped the charity acheive in 2005, helped this pack pull in over and above its £299,000 target.

Each page of the calendar featured a milestone in Mind's 60 year history, a quote and an example of what the donor's money could acheive.

To get ActionAid supporters to take action against British supermarkets like Tesco that were failing their workers abroad by not providing even the most basic housing and safety equipment, we sent loyalty cards for them to sign and send on to their MPs, to help persuade them to bring up the topic in Parliament.

ROADTOUR is a plug-in for your sat nav that automatically launches engaging commentary on local places of interest, as you drive near.

I was one of several writers tasked with researching and writing original 200-word scripts for the UK's heritage sites. Being a local, I got the whole of London. I also wrote scripts for many sites in the South, South East and South West.

Rule no.1: don't bore people

We were told to keep it about people, rather than architecture. And I always tried to find the most interesting things to say, rather than the usual gumpf. I feel like it paid off. Several of my scripts seemed to feature in the press coverage, including the BBC's - which was nice. My Chiswick House script, too. And I'm a Chiswick boy. Double nice.

You're only as good as the last script you wrote for Masdar City

Welcome to the world's first sustainable city. Incredible but true. Taking shape in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

I wrote this script for a presentation at The World Future Energy Summit, hosted by Masdar in January 2010. There are more films about each aspect of the development. This is the introductory movie, produced by Wordsearch.

I didn't choose the voiceover and sadly no-one gave me the final script to check, after it had come back from the client. So there's one or two funny sentences. Deadlines were tight.

We interviewed, filmed, wrote, complied, edited and tested 17 other videos like this one, each on a different aspect of the city.

A 3-month project we had one month to complete.

In time for the World Future Energy Summit in January 2010.

Over Christmas.

We wrote male and female versions, to uplift response. And we gave donors an insight into the latest research their money was funding. It seemed to work. We smashed targets, resulting in The Prostate Cancer Charity's most successful appeal ever.

Hays Recruitment

A pack to catch the eye of finance professionals with itchy feet, counteract their perception of Hays as 'boring' and nudge them to re-register to receive only the most suitable job opportunities.

I got some feedback from Drayton Bird on this one. 'I love the opening sentence', he said but added 'this event is about people, so it's needs a photo of some people'.

This is just a scamp of a poster than ran at Croydon Station in around 1998. I never got a copy or photo of the poster because I wrote it on a week's placement with a recruitment advertising division of McCann Erickson, London. They didn't offer me a job and I didn't ask. The 'studio' was one artworker in a corridor-shaped room about 3m long. Shame I never got a copy because it's probably the first published poster I ever wrote. I was given the visual and told to 'write a headline and copy'. My first week copywriting and I think it's some of the best copy I've ever written. Click the picture and see what you think.
